Not even their lowest scoring half of the season could slow down the blazing hot Blue Streaks.
Following just 36 points scored in the first stanza, the JCU men's basketball team powered their way to a 82-74 win over the Heidelberg Student Princes.
Although they have lost more games than they won, Heidleberg was no push over. The Student Princes had won three of their last four, including a victory over second place Mount Union.
The Blue Streaks were the hotter team, now having won their last six games. With the 0-3 start in the OAC is in the rearview mirror, JCU has won its last four contests by an average by 13.75 points.
After both teams traded shots in a back-and-forth affair to start the game, the first half wound down with the Blue Streaks finding their grove.
With four minutes remaining in the opening half, Heidelberg made it a one possession ball game. JCU outscored the home team 7-2 to go ahead by eight points at the break.
In the second half, both the Blue Streaks and Student Princes went back and forth but then JCU went on a 9-0 run to put Heidelberg enough behind the lead that there was no catching up. That 9-0 run gave John Carroll a 66-52 lead, their largest of the game.
The Blue and Gold spread the wealth along the stat sheet, having all five starters in double figures. It was the sixth man,
Connor Fitzgerald, that led the way with 16 points — on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
Jimmy Berger and
Sean Flannery played pivotal roles in the second half with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Flannery came about as close as you can come to a triple-double, also adding nine assists and seven rebounds. Berger was a rebound away from his third double-double of the year.
The Blue Streaks have lived up to their moniker this season. They started with a five game winning streak, suffered a three-game losing streak, and have now rattled off six wins in a row.
John Carroll, currently ranked fifth in Division III in three-point field goal percentage and tenth in three-point field goals made, shot 14-28 from beyond the arc tonight.
Next on the schedule for JCU is the Capital Crusaders at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 1 p.m.
