John Carroll has rarely opened its season at home, and when it has, the results have not always been worth celebrating.
On Friday at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks posted their victory in a season home opener since 1999 by outlasting Fredonia State, 3-2, in the first meeting between the two schools.
JCU had lost its previous five matches in which it opened at home. The last win was a 2-0 triumph over Wooster in a contest that pre-dated Shula Stadium and was played in what is now known as Hamlin Quad.
The Blue Streaks got on the board first when
Sydney Scello connected off a perfect feed from
Rachel Braunegg in the 12th minute. It was the only score by either team in the opening half.
John Carroll's lead ballooned to 2-0 when
Brittany Dufalla capitalized on an outstanding corner kick from
Jaclyn Audino in the 54th minute, knocking a shot into the right side for the two-goal lead.
The advantage was sliced in half just six minutes later when Fredonia's Jordan Barrett took advantage of a fail to clear and scored the Blue Devils first goal.
JCU appeared to grab the dagger in the 84th minute when a violation by Fredonia gave the Blue Streaks a free kick inside the box. Audino seized the moment to pop in the goal for the 3-1 lead.
Fredonia was able to answer again in the 86th minute but the Blue Streaks refused the relinquish the lead and closed out the contest.
John Carroll held a slight 13-12 shots advantage.
Danielle DelGiudice made six saves.
