For as dominant as John Carroll was tonight at times in terms of possession and shots taken, it should not have come down to the final minute.
Thankfully, William Turritin made it a moot point in the end. His first career goal, a rip from 30 yards out with 30 ticks left on the regulation clock, lifted the Blue Streaks to a 3-2 victory over Oberlin Friday night at Don Shula Stadium.
JCU built a 2-0 lead in the first half, as goals by freshman
Brenden Swann and
Mikey Burrington were part of a deluge of shots that resulted in a 10-1 advantage in that category for the home team.
The Blue Streaks were still peppering the Oberlin goal but could not seem to cash in. The Yeomen hung around, and a turnover deep in the JCU end led to the first goal for the visitors, as Ben Keller pounced for a tally in the 70th minute.
The stunner came in the 88th minute when Oberlin's hard press paid off. Keller found a wide open Nic Jandeleit, who sent a shot whistling into the right side of the net for the equalizer.
JCU had a 22-6 shots advantage yet appeared to be heading to overtime.Â
Turritin had other thoughts. Seizing a loose ball near midfield, he raced through the Oberlin defense and uncorked the game winner - a missile that found the upper left corner.
This was just the second time in the last six years that JCU had won the first match of the season (2017)
