Blue Streaks Drop Doubleheader to Rival Baldwin Wallace, Must Wait for OAC Postseason Fate

The Blue Streaks traveled to Baldwin Wallace University knowing that they had the chance to clinch an OAC postseason birth with one victory out of two games played in Berea, Ohio. After dropping both games to the Yellow Jackets, the Blue and Gold will need to wait for the results from other OAC contests being played tomorrow to find out their fate.

Game One:

Baldwin Wallace starter Nick Smith was the star in the first contest of the day, pitching a dominant 8.2 innings and giving up three earned runs and picking up the victory to bring his record to 4-0 on the year. Blue Streak starter Mitchell Midea matched Smith through the first three innings of action, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.

Baldwin Wallace got the afternoon's scoring underway in the bottom of the fourth when Tony LoParo drove in his teammate Reese Albright to make the score 1-0 in favor of the hosts. That run would chase Midea, who made way for reliever Henry Haracz. The freshman would get out of the jam in the fourth, but allow two runs in the next frame on RBI knocks from Sam Sustersic and Reese Albright. Erich Payne would relieve Haracz and give up another run in that same inning off an Asa Adams RBI single, making the score 4-0 after five full innings.

The Blue Streaks responded in the top of the sixth, with Dominic Mittiga providing a sacrifice fly to score Joe Charpentier from third to make the score 4-1. The score would stay there until the bottom of the seventh, when RBI from both Adams and Kyle Pennington made the score 6-1 in favor of Baldwin Wallace after seven full innings of action.

The Blue Streaks attempted to make a comeback in their last frame on offense, but unfortunately fell short. Sam Heaton hit the first home run of his career to make the score 6-2, and a Matthew Springer single resulted in pinch runner Mason Coleman scoring on a Yellow Jacket error to make the score 6-3.
Jack Raines relieved Smith with one out left to get in the ninth, and dispatched the Blue Streaks to get his fourth save of the year and increase the Yellow Jacket's OAC record to 13-4.

Midea picked up the loss, dropping his overall record on the year to 5-3. Patrick Keohane, Sam Heaton, Justin Hanley and Matthew Springer all finished with two hits each in the loss.

Game Two:

The Yellow Jackets would take the momentum gained from their game one victory and use it to good effect at the start of the second contest, scoring two quick runs off starter Andrew Steele.  Philip Wells and Sam Sustersic each picked up RBI to make the score 2-0 after the first inning of action. They would tack on to their lead in the second with a sacrifice fly from Alex Ludwick to make the score 3-0, and would again score in the bottom of the third to bring their lead to 4-0 after three full innings.

The Blue Streaks responded for their first big outbreak of offense all day, getting to starter Danny Cody in the process. RBI from Matthew Springer and Joe Charpentier made the score 4-2, and a big two-RBI knock from Derek Penman tied the score at 4-4 after four innings of play. That would be the last run the Blue Streaks would score the rest of the day.

The Yellow Jackets broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Ludwick came through again for BW, hitting an RBI double off Nicholas Michel to score two Yellow Jacket base runners to make the score 6-4. Nathaniel Wenson came in and pitched a strong three innings but gave up a run to make the score 7-4. The Yellow Jackets would never relinquish their lead.

Danny Cody would hand things over to Jack Raines, who threw a nine-out save (the fifth of his season) to give Baldwin Wallace another victory on home turf. Cody would pick up the win to bring his regular season record to a perfect 9-0, while Johnny Merrill, whose runners were inherited by Michel in the fifth, picked up the loss to bring his record to 3-3.

The losses drop John Carroll to an overall record of 23-15, and a 10-8 record in the OAC. They will now have to wait for results from the rest of the conference in order to see if they will make it into postseason play.
