It was a gorgeous day in Bexley, Ohio, but that was of little consolation to the John Carroll women's lacrosse team. Despite winning the shots battle, the Blue Streaks were only able to convert ten of 38 attempts into scores, falling to the host Capital Crusaders, 17-10.
John Carroll now moves to 2-2 in conference play while Capital remains undefeated with a 4-0 record in the OAC.
Capital entered the match firing on all cylinders. The Crusaders scored five goals in the first 12 minutes of the match, broken up by an early score from
Emma Workman.
Once Capital netted their fifth goal at the 18:11 mark, the Blue Streaks tried a keeper switch, but the netminder situation did little to slow the hosts down as JCU surrendered a season high goal total.
Once
Brooke McQuinn snatched her first goal of the game and Workman added another ina four-minute span, it seemed like a spark had been ignited. However, the spark did not last long in the Blue Streaks favor, as the Crusaders regained their fiery ferocity, garnering three straight scores to put a five goal distance between themselves and the Blue Streaks. Six of Capital's first half goals came from Free Position after eight attempts, generated by 14 JCU fouls.
Colleen Grombala decided it was time to flip the switch, scoring twice from free position within 20 seconds of action, cutting the Capital lead to 8-5 at the break.
Entering the locker room down three goals, the Blue and Gold lead the Crusaders in shots (20-16) and draw controls (11-3). Capital achieved less turnovers and fouls than John Carroll in that half, going 11-11 in clear attempts. Across both teams, only three of the 13 goals were created through assists.
In the final 30 minutes, the Crusaders maintained their grip on the lead, never seceding it throughout the entire contest. Capital had four players with at least three goals.
Grombala achieved a hat trick six minutes into the second half and added another goal later in the match, marking thr eighth contest this season where Grombala has scored a hat trick.
Alex Heishman netted two of her five shots in the second half, continuing her incredible run through her first year in a John Carroll uniform. The freshman has scored in every game this season, adding to the JCU tally in each of the 11 matches.
Alexis Guage contributed to two of JCU's scores with two assists, the first of which put her into John Carroll's point's century club.
Elyssa Zablo had five saves, which included the 200th save in her career, solidifying herself atop the JCU record board.
The Blue and Gold will take on the Mount Union Purple Raiders this Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
