One team was 1-8, the other 10-1.
A mismatch on paper turned out to be quite the opposite, as the one-win Blue Streaks swept the doubles en route to a decisive 7-2 victory over ten-win Baldwin Wallace Wednesday afternoon at the Ursuline College courts in Pepper Pike, Ohio.
Gutsy efforts from all three doubles pairs were evidence that this would not be like the OAC Tournament semifinal last May were John Carroll had to rally to reach its fourth consecutive league final.
David Sinense and
Andy Siciliano disposed of Baldwin Wallace's top pair, the returning All-OAC duo of Dominic Polifrone and Matt Harris, by an 8-4 count.Â
Gustavo Garcia and
Andrew Triner followed suit, taking down Jake Elbin and Roger Boyer by the same score.
Parker Holyn and
Adi Jha completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win in the #3 match.
The Blue Streaks would finish the job in singles, winning four of the six matches.
Doug Moore at #6 and Siciliano at #2 were the first to finish quick wins to seal the match at #6 and #2 singles, respectively. Ja at #4 and Triner at #5 also won in straight sets.
Garcia lost in a third set tiebreaker at #3 while Sinsense retired in his match, trailing 2018 OAC player of the Year Polifrone 6-2 4-1.
JCU improved to 2-8 overall and 2-0 in league play. Baldwin Wallace fell to 10-2 and 0-1.
