In their last regular season Ohio Athletic Conference home game, John Carroll's dominant offense led them to victory against Heidelberg University tonight by a margin of 21-2.
The victory put John Carroll in position to claim a postseason berth in the OAC Tournament for a fifth year in a row with a victory at Ohio Northern Saturday.
John Carroll moves to 4-3 in the OAC (9-6 overall), while Heidelberg falls to 1-6 in the OAC (7-9 overall).
The first half was dominated by all Blue Streak offense. Just 30 seconds into the game,
Emma Workman found the back of the net for John Carroll to get on the scoreboard first. Just a possession later Senior Alexis Gauge added back-to-back goals, the second coming off an assist from Coleen Grombala. Next, it was
Alex Heishman adding some offense of her own for the Blue Streaks, extending the lead to 4-0.
Gauge found the back of the net again, for the third time in less than ten minutes. Â In the next series of possessions, Grombala scored off an assist from Gauge and Heishman found the back of the net once again.
Heidelberg responded for the first time as Anna Winnicki found her way through the Blue Streak defense to get Heidelberg on the scoreboard. Jen Kovarik recorded the assist on the play.
A possession later, Heishman recorded her third goal of the game to maintain the Blue Streak lead. Â Grombala added another goal for John Carroll, her second of the night.
Grombala scored back to back goals in the final minutes of the game to give the Blue Streaks a 14-1 advantage at the half. John Carroll controlled the pace in the first half, recording 27 shots to Heidelberg's four. The John Carroll defense also did their part, forcing Heidelberg to 15 first half turnovers.
Heishman finished the first half scoring a total of five goals, tying the most goals she has scored in a single game this season. Grombala also finished the first half with five goals.
During the first half, Senior
Brooke McQuinn recorded her 500th career draw control.
Gauge started off the second half with a goal just three minutes in, continuing the dominant Blue Streak offense. The following possession, Heishman netted her sixth goal of the night, her season high for most goals in single a game.
Jenna Ginsberg scored her first career goal to extend the John Carroll lead to 17-1.
Capitalizing on a fast-break situation, Heidelberg scored their second goal of the night from Jen Kovarik with 10:35 remaining in the game.
Gauge totaled five goals on the night, tying her season single game record for most goals in a game.Â
Heishman moved into 7th all-time in goals in John Carroll history, with 44 career goals.
McQuinn, who claimed her 10th career OAC Player of the Week honor earlier this week, filled up the stat sheet again, leading her team in ground balls with six, draw controls with seven and caused turnovers with three.
Workman, Grombala,
Molly Carroll and
Sydney Lang all had four ground balls.
Elyssa Zablo and Kaleigh Koutula each had three saves.
The Blue Streaks travel to Ada, Ohio this Saturday to play Ohio Northern University at 1:00 pm for their final OAC regular season game.Â
