Box Score 2 In their final two games of their annual Florida trip, the John Carroll University softball team came up victorious against Houghton (6-4) and Wartburg (11-0).
The Blue Streaks finished game one with a two-run advantage over the Highlanders prior to shutting out the Knights 11-0, improving JCU's record to 6-4 on the season.
Game One
Houghton may have gotten off to a four-run lead by the middle of the third inning (4-0), but a combination of the Blue Streak bats and defense erased the Highlander's advantage and shifted the momentum back to the Blue and Gold.
In the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded,
Quinn Sobieszczanski doubled to score
Hannah Vicini and
Lindsay McKnight. Sobieszczanski would then eventually come around to score off of a single from
Kristen Jesberger to give JCU their final run of the inning to make the score 4-3.
John Carroll added three more runs to their score in the sixth. After back-to-back singles by Caitlin Fitzsimmon and Jesberger led off the inning,
Sydney Hall was called upon to pinch run for Jesberger.
Miranda Noday the doubled to score Fitzsimmons and advance Hall to third. A sac fly by
Crista Nativio and a single from McKnight would bring in the final two runs of the game to make the final score 6-4 in favor of the Blue Streaks.
McKnight,
Emma Gurley, and Jesberger all finished the game with two hits apiece, while Sobieszczanski tallied a pair of RBI's.
Jenn Patterson (4-1) took home the win for the Blue and Gold. In her four innings of work, Patterson allowed just two hits and struck out one batter.
Game Two
The Blue Streaks continued to excel on offense against Wartburg, a team that came into the game 8-1 on the season. Not only did the Blue and Gold run rule the Knights, but they also held them scoreless to record their third shutout of the season.
John Carroll's offense wasted no time, scoring 10 of their 11 runs by the fourth inning. The Knights, however, did not go down easy. In the first inning, Wartburg managed to get the bases loaded with no outs, but Jess Cook pitched her way out of it to the Knights at bay.
The second and third innings proved to be crucial for JCU, with the Blue Streaks tallying four runs in each of their at-bats.
Elizabeth Fraas led the way for the Blue Streaks, scoring a combined four runs on two hits.
"We played our most complete games of the season tonight," said head coach
Nicole Loudin. "I could not be more proud of them and our veteran leadership. We had patient at bats and we run ruled an 8-1 team. It was so amazing to see this team play at that level!"
John Carroll will next travel to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the Yeowomen in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for approximately 3 p.m.
