Sizzling Start Propels John Carroll Women's Lacrosse To Big Win Over Otterbein

The John Carroll women's lacrosse team is not playing around this season.

The Blue Streaks fired up their engines early on in the match, netting nine goals within the first ten minutes to roll to a 22-6 victory over visiting Otterbein Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.

Contributing to this fast start were Colleen Grombala (2), Alexis Guage (2), Emma Workman (2), Carly Ross (2), and Alex Heishman (1).

But they didn't stop there.

The Blue and Gold added another seven insurance goals, building themselves a 16-2 advantage at half thanks to the help of their aggressive defense.

"We were very happy with the ball movement on offense," said head coach Rachel Dell. "That's something we have been focusing on for two weeks."

Having a comfortable lead going into the second half, the Blue Streaks were able to control matters the rest of the way.

Elyssa Zablo tallied one save while allowing three goals, and Kaleigh Kotula came in halfway through the second half allowing three goals and making two saves. The defense stayed strong throughout the match holding the Cardinals to nine shots on goal.

Grombala led the team in goals, assists, ground balls, and caused turnovers.

JCU had a 38-10 shot advantage as nine Blue Streaks netted at least one goal to contribute to the Blue Streaks seventh win of the season, and their second in as many conference matches.

It was a good day for the three JCU seniors, who were honored before the game. The Blue Streaks won 23 of the 30 draws, with senior Brooke McQuinn leading the way with 12. Guage picked up five points on three goals and two assists. Sydney Lang helped the JCU defense log 17 ground balls to Otterbein's 10, as she contributed two to that total. She also had one of the team's ten caused turnovers.

"What really controlled the entire pace of the game was our draw circle play," said Dell. "All the players who took the draw or played the circle were why we played so much offense today. It was great to win big on Senior Day."

Otterbein fell to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The Blue Streaks are scheduled to play another conference match next Wednesday, April 3rd, at 7:00 pm. The game will take place in Berea, Ohio, against Baldwin Wallace University.
