For a good while, John Carroll held a slim 1-0 lead over visiting Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon in a first round NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship match at Don Shula Stadium.
The kind of slim lead that would normally be cause for nail biting and nervous pacing.
But the home standing Blue Streaks were seemingly always in control throughout. So when John Carroll added a second goal in the second half, it seemed more a validation than a relief.
Maybe it was both.
John Carroll (18-2-2) won its tenth consecutive match and set a program record with its 18th win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson (12-8-2). The Blue Streaks will advance to the second round where it will host and face Centre College, a 1-0 winner over Kalamazoo Saturday. The second round match will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Shula Stadium.
The first goal of the game occurred early and from a somewhat unlikely source.Â
Stephen Schutt scored his first goal of the season when he was able to jump on a failed clear at the edge of the box. He beat the defender to thr ball and rifled a shot from the left side to the right post for an unassisted tally. The time of th goal was 4:25 in the match.
That lead held the remainder of the half despite John Carroll's 18-0 advantage in shots taken and 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Blue Streaks remained in control until the opportunity presented itself for a second goal. That happened early in the second half, and it started with a William Turritin corner that was nearly deflected in by
Lawrence Cersosimo. When
Matt Nigro chased down the deflection, he found Turritin on the right side. Turritin then sent the ball back in, and
Chase Fernkorn followed the ball that had been redirected off the post and knocked it in for the score.
John Carroll finished the match with a 28-3 shots advantage, and also had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Blue Streaks are into the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
