Men's Soccer Captures League-Record 12th OAC Regular Season Crown By Blanking The Berg

A 2-0 win over Heidelberg Wednesday night enabled the John Carroll men's soccer team to capture the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title for the 12th time in school history.

No other curent league member has more than eight titles.

Playing in the rain once again, John Carroll started out with a hard attack on Heidelberg's defense, creating many shots on goal.

Matt Nigro was fouled on the Student Princes' 45 yard line, which almost led to a goal by the Blue Streaks offense.

It was Nigro again, only moments later, with a header off a corner kick that went just right of the goal post.

Two corner kicks in a row, with under 10 minutes in the first half, gave John Carroll a glimmer of hope for a goal, but no such luck was in store for the Blue Streaks.

There would be no goals in the first half, with the halftime score remaining 0-0.

Starting the second half, the Blue Streaks came out with a new found desire to score.

It only took five minutes for John Carroll's offense to find Mario Aboumitri on the outside of the box, who had a beautiful finish into the opposite side of the goal. Jared Ianiro was credited with the assist.

Still, the Blue Streaks offense looked for another goal to provide proper cushion on a night where good footing was hard to come by.

They found it off a penalty kick by Will Turrittin that went straight into the bottom left corner, now with 25 minutes left in the game.

Until the last minute of the game, the Streaks offense was charging the Student Princes' defense with a shot in the final seconds of the game.

The Blue Streaks finished with a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks.

JCU closed out their regular season with a record of 7-1 at home after this win over Heidelberg. The Blue Streaks improve their overall record to 14-2-2 and their OAC record to 7-0-1.

The 22 points amassed by the Blue Streaks cannot be overtaken even with one game remaining. JCU's closest pursuers -- Ohio Northern and Capital at 5-2-1 -- only have 16 points.

The Blue Streaks play their final regular season game against Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, on Saturday, November 2 at 7:00 pm.
