Unlikely Goal Scorers Carry The Night For JCU Men's Soccer At Hiram

John Carroll got scoring form two unlikely sources Wednesday evening at Hiram College to produce a 3-1 win that kept the momentum going from a win at nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan Saturday.

Two seniors who had combined to score two career goals before tonight accounted for all three JCU goals. Brian Lutz, who had two career scores entering play, had his first multi-goal match of his career. Matt Nigro tallied his first career goal that proved to be the game winner.

It was a quick start for JCU offensively. William Turrittin recorded the first shot, which also found the frame, inside the ninth minute. It would not be long until the Blue and Gold struck in a big way. Almost midway through the 18th minute, Lutz scored his second goal of the season, and gave JCU the 1-0 lead.

After a minute and 28 seconds had elapsed, Evan Malpass took a corner kick and found Nigro on another tally to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute.

Both teams would have their chances later on in the half, but the defense of the Blue Streaks kept Hiram off the scoreboard, and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. Liam McIntosh returned in goal for the Blue and Gold after being sidelined with an injury. He made two saves in the opening half.

The Terriers worked their way back into the match, however. The second half saw chances on both sides, but Hiram got a goal back with Giovanni Meza scoring the first goal of the match for his side, and now JCU's lead was trimmed to 2-1 in the 64th minute.

However, the Blue Streaks would have an answer. Just over ten minutes after Meza's goal, a Blue Streaks player was fouled in the 18-yard box, and John Carroll was awarded a penalty kick. Brian Lutz stepped up to take the shot, and he would convert for his second goal of the day to make it 3-1 in the 74th minute. The scoreline would hold for the remainder of the match, and JCU claimed their second road victory of the season.

The Blue Streaks outshot the Terriers 19-9, including eight shots on goal. McIntosh finished the match with three saves in his 43rd career win.

This is the sixth consecutive win for John Carroll over Hiram, improving their record to 28-14-1 all-time. JCU has not lost to the Terriers since September 13, 2013.

JCU returns to action this Sunday, September 23rd, as they take on Carnegie Mellon at home in the final non-conference game of the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
