John Carroll University (13-5, 7-1 OAC) took on Elizabethtown College (10-9, 4-2 Landmark) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. In their appearance in the first round for the second straight year, JCU dropping the contest against Blue Jays 9-6.
The first quarter saw the Blue Jays take a 2-0 lead and keep the Blue Streaks of the board, but JCU would get the offense going in the second quarter. Within the first five minutes of the second session,
MacGregor Roberts and
Colin Corcoran, with an assist from
Collin Rice, the Blue and Gold tied the game at 2-2.
The Blue Jays would respond with another two goals, but the Blue Streaks would also have a response.
Logan Calhoun assisted Corcoran and
Skyler Blake on the next two goals.
Connor Pike followed with a goal of his own, with the assist credited to Corcoran, to give JCU their first lead of the game with 3:23 remaining in the half (5-4). However, Elizabethtown closed the half with a goal at the 32 second mark left to tie the game at 5.
Jacob Betz played the first half in goal for the Blue Streaks, recording three saves, while
Braden Kaib won 7 of 12 face-offs in the first 30 minutes of play.
The third quarter would also have two goals scored, but it would be split between the two teams. The Blue Jays scored first, but Corcoran scored with 9:22 left in the quarter to once again tie the game (6-6). Rice was awarded with the assist.
Will Good, who played the second half in goal for JCU, made three of his four saves in this quarter.
Both defenses would stand their ground and continue to hold the opposing offenses scoreless. The first goal wouldn't be scored until 3:22 left in the game, marking the first of three unanswered goals for Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays would keep the Blue Streaks scoreless for the remainder of the game and secure the 9-6 victory to move on to the second round.
Brian McMullen finished with five ground balls in the game, part of JCU winning the ground ball battle 22-19. Kaib finished the game with 11 face-off wins in 19 attempts. JCU would also go 14-15 on clears.
The Blue Streaks made their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in their fifth year as a varsity program. Their record in NCAA Tournament play now stands at 1-3.
