Box Score 2 The JCU baseball team continues their season on the road, being the home team of a twin bill held at Austintown Fitch. The battle today with the reigning OAC champion Mount Union Purple Raiders ended up being a split decision, as both teams took a win home to their respective campuses.
It was an up and down day involving the shutouts for the Blue and Gold. For the first time this season, JCU was held scoreless in game one, but bounced back in game two by recording the first defensive shutout performance of the 2018 season.
Game 1 - John Carroll 0, Mount Union 4
All it took was one strong inning for the Purple Raiders to best the Blue Streaks.
Senior Steve Virost took the mound in game one, throwing three shutout innings, but in his final inning of action Mount Union got to the senior pitcher scoring four runs in the fourth inning.
UMU's Phil Mary threw his best game of the season, going nine strong innings, not allowing a single run.
In the sixth inning JCU showed some strengths at the dish recording two hits, but were unable to capitalize, from there.
Mount Union had 13 hits in the game with multiple opportunities to grow their lead, but the Blue and Gold stepped up on defense making play after play.
Game 2 - John Carroll 6, Mount Union 0
Following being shutout in game one, JCU responded early in game two scoring the first run in the second inning.
One run was more than enough for sophomore pitcher
Freddy Moore who took the mound in game two and was lights out shutting down the high powered Purple Raiders offense. Moore finished with two strikeouts and no earned runs in seven full innings of action.
Four different Blue Streaks collected more than one hit, as junior
Dominic Mittiga's bottom seventh inning double brought teammates home. The double was Mittiga's lone hit of game two, but the deciding factor increased JCU's lead from three to six, and one that the Blue Streaks would not falter.
The Blue Streaks will hope to play the first true home games of the 2018 season this Saturday, welcoming the Otterbein Cardinals to Schweikert Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
