Box Score 2 A hard fought offensive battle was had in an opening game victory for the JCU baseball team, as they powered their way to a 12-11 win. Game two was not as generous as the Blue Streaks only scored three times on eight hits to lose 10-3.
With the series spilt, the Blue Streaks advance to 15-10 overall and 6-4 in the OAC.
Game 1
The John Carroll University Blue Streaks bats were alive and on fire as the Blue and Gold combined to blast six total home runs in a 12-11 win against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The most important homer of them all was junior
Matthew Donnelly's crack of the bat that sent the pitch over the right field wall to give JCU the 12-11 go-ahead lead in the top of the ninth inning.
With today's six home runs hit in this afternoon's game, the Blue Streaks tied a single game record of home runs in one game dating back to their contest in 1978 against Washington and Jefferson.
Sophomore
Aaron Zawadzki sparked the scoring spree for the Blue Streaks in the top of the first inning, stepping up to the plate sending the pitch over the right center field wall to provide JCU with a 2-0 lead. Ohio Northern conquered shortly after as Luke Klinehoffer scored on a ground out double play, cutting the lead to one run.
JCU's lightning struck in the third and fourth innings, as the Blue and Gold hit four home runs and scored six times. Junior
Patrick Keohane, Zawadzki, and junior
Dominic Mittiga had the best of the ONU pitching staff, hitting back-to-back-to-back solo home runs to deliver a 5-1 lead at the end of the third inning. Zawadzki's homer was his second of the afternoon, for his second of the season.
In the fourth inning, Keohane wanted his second home run as well, hitting a two-run shot over the right field wall, as JCU established a 7-1 lead. The scoring run would not stop there, as junior
Derek Penman hit an RBI double to right field, scoring Mittiga to give JCU their largest lead of the day at 8-1.
In the sixth inning, the Blue Streaks added two more of insurance runs following a Mittiga sac-fly that scoring a run, and a two RBI single by
Michael Anderson to give the Blue and Gold the 11-3 lead.
ONU refused to let the match be all JCU, scoring eight total runs in the sixth, seventh, and eight innings making it nerve racking for the Blue and Gold as their eight run lead was diminished.
Donnelly bailed the Blue Streaks out in the final inning, hitting his first home run of the season to regain the lead for the Blue and Gold.
Freshman
Andrew Steele maintained the 12-11 lead for the Blue Streaks, only allowing one hit in the bottom of the ninth inning as JCU escaped with their first win of the day. Steele earned his fifth save of the season for the Blue and Gold.
Sophomore
Freddy Moore was the game's starter pitching 6.1 inning and striking out three batters. After pitching 1.2 innings and striking out three players, sophomore
Cameron Mayle received the win improving to 2-1 on the year.
Keohane attributed his sixth game this season with more than three hits in a game, and Mittiga had his eighth game of the season of more than three hits in a game, as well.
JCU's 12 runs scored was the third highest amount of runs scored by the Blue Streaks this season.
Game 2
The Polar Bears picked right up where they left off in game one scoring double digit runs in game two, scoring 10 runs and holding the Blue Streaks to only three runs in an offensive slow down for the Blue and Gold at Wander, Field in Ada, Ohio.
Ohio Northern started off on the scoreboard first, as Will Davis hit a single to center field giving the Polar Bears their first lead between the two games. The Blue Streaks countered quickly the following inning, as Penman reached second base on an error scoring Charpentier.
The Blue and Gold took a tie game into the third inning, until Zawadzki homered for the third time of the day, giving JCU their only lead of game two with the score at 2-1.
ONU wanted no part of another JCU lead, as the Polar Bears attested to their late offensive run in game one, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to gain the 5-4 lead.
JCU tied the game once again in the fifth inning, as Mittiga singled to center field for his second RBI between the two games. ONU added onto their active fourth inning, scoring two runs to gain their second largest lead of the day at 7-3.
The sixth and seventh innings were scoreless for both teams, but ONU continued on scoring in the eighth inning as they added three insurance runs to increase the score 10-3. This was the sixth time this season the Blue Streaks allowed more than 10 runs. The seven run lead was their largest lead of the day, as JCU tried to spurt a comeback in the final inning,
The Blue Streaks were faced in a similar situation as the Polar Bears in game one, in the position of being down seven runs. The Blue and Gold bats failed to mount a comeback of their own, only reaching base one time in the ninth inning.
JCU across the board was spent on the offensive end, as the only player to add more than one hit was Zawadzki..
The Blue Streaks pitched three pitchers between freshman
Duncan Cappar, junior
Nathaniel Wenson, and freshman Nichols Michel. They allowed 16 hits, contributing to only three strikeouts as a unit.
JCU will play host to Denison University on Sunday April 15, at Schweickert Field for their long awaited home opener.
