Box Score 2 A wild opening game of the 2018 campaign helped JCU earn a split with Allegheny on the first day of competition for both teams played in Beckley, West Virginia, on Saturday afternoon and evening.
Game One
Bottom of the 15th, no outs, runners on second and third, down one, freshman
Mike McCarty steps up to the dish and drives in two Blue Streaks giving John Carroll the 10-9 victory over Allegheny College.
In their first game of the season John Carroll had to deal with a lot of pressure, and show resilience against the Gators.
Throughout the game the Blue and Gold found themselves with their backs against the wall, and always having a response.
In the bottom of the ninth inning
Monroe Donnelly awaited on third base with one out as
Christian Cassaro drove a ball to left field and
Monroe Donnelly raced home and beat the ball to the plate tying the game at 6-6.
Allegheny once again in the 14th inning would strike first putting John Carroll in another do or die situation.
JCU stepped up and delivered.
This time
Nathan Reich would come up to bat with two outs and no one on base. Reich successfully reach first base with a single up the middle.
Patrick Keohane, knocked Reich in with his second triple of the day.
Allegheny scored two runs this time in the 14th in hopes it would be too much for JCU to overcome. However this time John Carroll made a statement.
Monroe Donnelly walked to start the inning, following that Dom Mittiga walked up to the batter's box and squeaked a double down the right field line.
With runners in scoring position
Joe Charpentier reached by an error, with
Monroe Donnelly scoring.
McCarty rocked a single up the middle scoring down Mittiga and Charpentier, and clinching the victory for JCU.
Keohane had a career day for the Blue and Gold. At the dish seven times, Keohane hit a homerun, two triples, and a single, simply a double shy of recording a cycle.
Freddy Moore took the bump for JCU, going 4 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs.
John Merrill and
Nicholas Michel dominated out of the bullpen, only letting one run cross home plate in over eight innings of action.
Game Two
Whatever energy it took to win game one was spent for game two. The Blue Streaks fell behind early and lost by a 17-6 count in a seven inning game.
McCarty was 2-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap as JCU was held to six hits.
John Carroll trailed 9-2 after four innings but attempted to make a comeback, plating two runs in the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth made the score 9-5, but Allegheny erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to end any drama.
The Blue Streaks and Gators will play one more game in Beckley on Sunday to conclude the three-game weekend series.
