With the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title clinched, and therefore home court advantage throughout the league tournament clinched as well, the John Carroll Blue Streaks can look forward to playing in front of a home crowd in the postseason.
But before JCU could get there, the Blue Streaks had to wrap up regular season play against the Capital University Crusaders Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the wrap up did not go too well. Capital came out with the 85-80 victory on its senior night.
The loss costs John Carroll the ability to be outright OAC regular season champions for the first time since 2009-10, as JCU will share the title with Marietta, which can now claim four consecutive league crowns -Â the first school in OAC men's basketball history to win four consecutive regular season championships.
The loss did not cost John Carroll the number one seed, as the Blue Streaks, bu virtue of the sweep of the Pioneers, will be the top seed in next week's OAC Tournament.
The game began with neither team gaining distance from the other. JCU held the largest lead for either squad, which was a mere six points at the 12:21 mark. Each time either team attempted to go on a run, the other answered. Nothing emphasized this point more than the 13 lead changes which occurred in the first half. The Blue Streaks were struggling offensively and only shot 41 percent from the field. Sophomore
Ryan Berger led John Carroll with nine points on 3-7 shooting through the half. At the end of the first 20 minutes Capital held a slim 38-37 advantage at the half.
Capital looked motivated to start the second half. The Crusaders went on a 16-8 run to start the final 20 minutes. But, like much of the season, JCU found offense in one of their younger players.
Ryan Berger netted a three-point shot, caused a turnover, and then was fouled on another three-point attempt at the 11:35 mark. With the three makes at the stripe the sophomore went on a 6-0 run himself to get the game within two points.
John Carroll would not be able to ride the Berger momentum, as Capital was able to keep their lead through the final 11 minutes of the game. JCU did not give the Crusaders much room to breath. The largest lead the home team would hold was eight points in those final minutes. Capital's finally seemed to put the game away at the 1:16 mark when junior Austin Schreck hit a fadeaway three-point shot while falling out of bounds with only 2 seconds on the shot clock. The incredible shot gave Capital just about all they needed to finish out the game.
JCU had five players score double digits.
Ryan Berger had the highest point mark on the team with 20. Senior
Brian Papich netted 11 himself along with two blocks and a steal. Matthew Csurhan contributed 11 points and had a team-high six rebounds.
The Blue Streaks next contest will come on next Tuesday. They will host Heidelberg, the no. 8 seed, in the quarterfinal round of the OAC tournament.
