The last time the John Carroll wrestling team faced a potential shutout at the hands of Cleveland State heading into the final match was 18 seasons ago.
On that November evening in the year 2000, in a match that was delayed 90 minutes due to blizzard conditions in Northeast Ohio, the burden of avoiding a shutout fell on the shoulders of heavyweight Eric Urdzik. The Division III All-American gave away 60 pounds and five inches of height to his opponent, but he got the only takedown of the match in the second period and held on for a 3-2 victory.Â
Urdzik would be inducted into the JCU Hall of Fame in 2013.
Time will tell if
Luca Santillo has a Hall of Fame career, but the freshman handled a similar burden Sunday afternoon at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. His 15-0 technical fall victory in the 285-pound bout over Jacob Adams prevented a Cleveland State shutout win, netting the Blue Streaks' only points in a 33-5 loss.
JCU lost a handful of close matches throughout the night.
Kyle Murray dropped a 3-2 decision at 125 despite riding out the third period,
Jarrad Lasko trailed by only a 5-3 score entering the third period at 149, and
Sam Gross led 3-1 early in the second before falling 6-4 at 174.
After a win at 197 put the Vikings up 33-0, Cleveland State needed just one more victory to secure just the second shutout in the history of the series, and the first since 1974. But Santillo got his first take down in the final minute of the first period and was off and running. His win moved him to 11-4 on the year.
