For John Carroll, the opportunity for a road victory seemed to be sliding toward the side of improbable with only 56 seconds remaining to be played in the fourth quarter and host Bluffton holding a 67-62 advantage.
Improbability is not impossibility, however, and the Blue Streaks authored an improbable finish Wednesday night at the Sommer Center in Bluffton, Ohio.
A pair of three-pointers by
Abby Adler and
Dani Carlson -- the latter occurring with 14 ticks left in regulation -- along with two clutch free throws in between by
Nicole Heffington forced overtime at 70-70.
Once there, John Carroll outscored the Beavers by an astounding 16-0 count to seize that road win opportunity by a final score of 86-70
The Blue Streaks started strong, jumping out to a 10-6 lead, but Blufton responded by scoring eight of the final ten points of the period, and held a 14-12 edge at the end of the first 12 minutes.
JCU tied it up three times before taking a 24-21 lead on a
Sara Spicer three ball, but the beavers once again had the last laugh ina period as they recovered to take a 37-33 advantage into the locker room.
The third period belonged to the Blue & Gold, as JCU outscored their hosts by a 20-11 margin to take a 53-48 lead into the final act. John Carroll was still in front, 62-59, following a Carlson three-pointer at the 4;30 mark, but would go ice cold over the next three-and-a-half minutes. All teh while, Bluffton made free throws to reclaim the upper hand, 67-62, entering the final minute of play.
That was when Adler, Heffington and Carlson came up with their heroics. Adler broke the dry spell with a three-pointer with 51 seconds left to make the score 67-65. After Bluffton's TJ mills split free throws, Heffington made hers with 36 second left.Â
Mills would convert both of her free throws with 21 seconds remaining to put Bluffton on top 70-67, but Carlson got free at the other end and drained her long range shot to tie the score at 70-70.
Bluffton never got a shot off as
Sarah Sprecher stole the ball and time ran out.
JCU jumped out immediately in the overtime period with Heffington scoring the first six points, getting assists from Adler and
Kahrin Spear, forcing a Beavers time out. The stoppage had no effect on the Blue Streaks, who turned the next two Bluffton possessions into fast break lay-ups. Carlson had one herself, and she started another finished off by Spear to make the score 80-70 with 2:10 left.
John Carroll shot 6-7 (.857) from the field and 4-4 (1.000) from the free throw line in the overtime session.Â
Heffington (21), Carlson (13) and Sprecher (11) scored in double figures for the Blue Streaks, who improved to 3-2 on the season. The John Carroll defensive effort resulted in 24 caused turnovers.
Brianna Gillig had 16 points and 15 boards for Bluffton, which fell to 1-4.
This was John Carroll's first victory in three tries against Bluffton.
