Holding onto a 1-0 lead entering the final minute of regulation, John Carroll was tantalizingly close to an upset win its Ohio Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal match at Mount Union.
Fate intervened, proving a full 90-minute effort is needed in games such as these.
Mount Union's Nicole Lanese scored unassisted with 55 seconds left in regulation to even the score at 1-1, then scored again in the 98th minute to help the Purple Raiders escape with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night in Alliance.
The sixth seeded John Carroll women's soccer team gave the third-seeded Mount Union Purple Raiders all they could handle in an evenly played match. Mount Union fired off 26 shots, 13 of which were on goal, and scored twice.  John Carroll had 19 shots, 13 of which were on goal, and scored once. Both goalies (Danielle DelGuidicxe for John Carroll) ended the game with over 10 saves.
The Blue Streaks got on the board first. After the two teams had played to a scoreless draw in the opening half, an unassisted goal by
Bailey Fischer at 52:23 broke the deadlock. Â This goal was the 47th goal in Fischer's long and illustrious career. The goal put Fischer in sole possession of the all-time goals record in John Carroll women's soccer history, breaking the tie she had with Julie Scaffidi.
JCU made that lead stand until the final minute of regulation, when Lanese broke through.
Lanese would play hero once again in the 98th minute. Â Lanese received a pass by Brooke Schmidt that floated over the Blue Streak defense. Â Then Lanese headed the ball into the back of the net to win the game for the Raiders.
John Carroll's season ends at 7-11-1 overall.
