The John Carroll University Blue Streaks continued their winning ways on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated the Heidelberg University Student Princes by a final score of 1-0 in Tiffin, Ohio.
The action started slowly, with both teams looking to take the momentum. Because of the field conditions at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex, the Blue Streaks needed a bit more of a direct approach against the Student Princes in order to take the lead. The Streaks' hard work payed off, as a corner from
Brian Lutz found the head of defender
Eric Rozsits, who nodded the service home to put the visitors up 1-0 in the first half.
The rest of the half was void of any clear cut chances for either team. John Carroll enjoyed most of the possession, but no more legitimate scoring opportunities. Midfielder Will Turrittin had an effective first half in the holding midfield role that he plays so well. His play was highlighted by an interception at midfield followed immediately by a 40 yard, aerial through-ball that found the feet of
Chad Kanakkanatt, who's shot went just wide.
Going into the second half, with the score still at 1-0 in favor of the Blue Streaks, the action mimicked that of the first half. Neither team could establish a real spell of possession, with the majority of the play being had in the middle of the field. No real chances were had until late in the second half when the Student Princes, buoyed by the sending off of Blue Streak defender
Matt Nigro, hit the crossbar with an attempt that was eventually cleared off the goal line.
John Carroll saw the game out with 10 men and claimed all three points. The Blue Streaks outshot the Student Princes 16-11, with Rozsits' goal being the lone tally for either team.
GoalkeeperÂ
Liam McIntosh recorded two saves and added another clean sheet to his total.
The Blue Streaks' next game is on October 27th, at Don Shula Stadium against Wilmington College on senior night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
