A cool game on an October night froze the Blue Streaks from maintaining their five-game winless streak, as John Carroll picked up a 6-0 win against the Pioneers of Marietta.
Â
Coming into Saturday night, the Blue and Gold lost their last five games by a combined score of 18-4. Although they allowed 18 goals in their last five games, it would not stop the Blue Streaks from winning their 18th game against Marietta in the history of the series.
Â
The number three would serve significance to start the match. Junior
Jaclyn Audino activated the lead for JCU, scoring her third goal of the season. Audino found the back of the net off a pass from freshman
Rachel Braunegg, her third assist of the season.
Â
At the 27:36 mark in the first half, senior
Bailey Fischer netted her ninth of goal of the season.
JCU held the 2-0 advantage at the half while the Blue Streaks outshot the Pioneers 19-0. Marietta goalkeeper Katie Conkle collected 10 saves.
Â
Just 2:44 into the second half, Fischer found the back of the net once again for her second goal of the game. Audino gathered her third point of the game, assisting on the goal. With the rain pouring down, JCU poured on the goals.
Â
Audino put the cherry on top with a goal from 30 yards out, compiling her third career game with two goals or more; the first time since Oct. 24, 2017, against Mount Union. She said after the game, "We really needed this win."
Â
In the contest, freshman
Kennedy Newhart scored her first career collegiate goal.
Â
The Blue and Gold 6-0 shutout win against the Pioneers was JCU's first home shutout since Oct. 7, 2017, when the Blue Streaks topped Marietta 5-0. It was also the first time the Blue Streaks scored six or more goals since beating the Pioneers 7-0 on Oct. 12, 2013. Following tonight's game, the Blue Streaks improved to 5-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the OAC.
Â
Tournament time is approaching, and the Blue and Gold are fighting for their chance at a shot to compete. "We need to keep putting goals on the board. It is really important that we win to try and get in to the tournament. This is do or die," said Fischer after the game.
Â
Next up for John Carroll University is Heidelberg University to close out the Blue Streaks home slate of their 2018 campaign. That match will take place at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 PM.
