It ended up being a tough evening for the John Carroll volleyball team as they fell in four games to the Mount Union Purple Raiders Raiders at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
But it started out like it would be a good night.
In the first set, the Blue Streaks found their groove when they were able to pull away midway through. Trailing 13-12, John Carroll went on a run where they scored nine of the next 12 points. JCU led 22-18 but had to hang on late, prevailing when an attack error by Marlee Peck was the deciding factor in the set. John Carroll came out on top.
After another back and forth affair, Mount Union came out on top 25-21 in the second set. The Blue Streaks led as late as 19-18 before the Purple Raiders kicked to the finish.
In the third frame, John Carroll had the lead for much of the set until the Raiders pulled ahead for good at 18-17.
Cassi Calamunci's two kills to start out the set helped John Carroll build a 10-4 advantage. However, Mount Union
scored nine of the last ten points of the game.
In set number four, Mount Union put the icing on the cake with a dominant 25-16 sealer.
Tonight's match was a case of one team heating up and one cooling off. Mount Union had an attack percentage of .175 in the first set and finished night with a mark of .303, while JCU started out .171 in the opening game and finished at .140 for the night, and failing to break .100 in the third and fourth sets.
Calamunci and
Sarah Calabrese led the way with 17 and 10 kills, respectively. Calabrese's ten kills tonight brought her career total to exactly 500, becoming the first member of this year's team to reach that milestone.
Ally Bartolone had 24 assists and Calamunci and
Carleen Ellerbruch each had three blocks.
For the Raiders, three players had double digit kills including 15 from Maria Ellesin who had an impressive .789 hitting percentage (15 kills, no errors, 19 attempts) in the match. Carly Stepic also added 48 assists.
John Carroll moves to 10-8 on the season while Mount Union improves to an impressive 18-2. This was only the third time this season that the Raiders won a match that did not end in a sweep.
The Blue Streaks look to get back on track with another home match on Thursday against Geneva.
