Second Period In Bexley Dooms John Carroll Bid For Back-To-Back Wins

Hoping to string two wins together for the first time this season, John Carroll went to Bexley Saturday with high hopes.

Problem was, it was Bexley, a historically difficult place to win for teams wearing Blue & Gold from University Heights. JCU has won just three times in 41 years at Capital, and just once since 2005.

Add to that a tenacious defense wearing Purple & Gray, and the result was a 64-50 setback for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks led after one period of play, 12-8, but were outscored 22-8 in the second quarter. At the half, Capital led by a score of 30-20 as JCU was held to one field goal and six free throws in the second ten minutes.

With Bri Pittinger scoring the first five points for her team, the Blue Streaks once again won a quarter, outscoring Capital in the third by a 15-13 margin.

But in the deciding fourth period, Capital did not allow John Carroll to get closer than an eight-point margin.

The woes were in the shooting numbers, as John Carroll managed to make 15-49 (.306) from the field and 2-15 (.133) from long range.

For John Carroll (3-10, 1-5 OAC), Chelbi Graham led the way with 17 points as she was 5-6 from the field and 7-12 from the free throw line. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Pittinger finished the game with 12 points and Nicole Heffington added ten points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Capital (7-6, 3-3 OAC) got a monster effort off the bench by Ellie Folan, who led all players with 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the field, 4-5 from three-point range, and 2-2 from the charity stripe.

JCU will get back on the road for another trip to the Columbus area on Wednesday, January 10, when it will face Otterbein (6-7, 2-4 OAC) for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Westerville.
