Four of John Carroll's first six wins were of the one goal variety, and one of the others involved a come-from-behind victory.
The Blue Streaks were seeking a triumph sans drama, and got such a result Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium. Two early goals in the opening period combined with a shutdown defensive effort yielded a 4-0 win for the Blue Streaks over visiting Hiram.
Up until this point of the campaign, John Carroll had yet to score in the opening 11 minutes of any contest. Tonight, the Blue Streaks scored twice in the opening 11 minutes, and both were courtesy of
Dalton Browsky.
In the sixth minute of the match, Browsky netted JCU's earliest goal of 2017 with a well directed ball between the keeper and a defender that found the left side.
Hayden Parente set up Dalton with a well timed thru ball.
In the 11th minute, Browsky took a feed from
Jake Lombardo and beat the Terriers keeper in a one-on-one situation.
The 2-0 advantage stood up for the remainder of the half as JCU outshot Hiram, 10-1, in the first 45 minutes.
It was much of the same in the second.
Jesse Marinaro and
Noah Johnston completed the scoring as JCU moved within one more win of matching its best start of the 21st century by a Blue Streak side. The 2000 team started 8-0 en route to a 13-3-2 mark and the program's first NCAA postseason appearance.
John Carroll, currently ranked #5 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches and #6 by d3soocer.com (both of which are the highest rankings JCU has achieved in either poll), had sizeable margins in shots (16-4) and corners (10-1) over the duration of the contest.
The Blue Streaks have now won six in a row over the Terriers, the last five by shutout.
Liam McIntosh was called upon to make two saves in earning his fifth shutout of the year.
