Offensive Explosion Leads Blue Streaks To Victory At Progressive Field

With a five-run fifth inning, John Carroll University baseball broke Wednesday's game wide open, and earned a win in a major league stadium.

The Blue Streaks opened up an eight-run lead on the way to a 10-5 victory over Case Western Reserve University at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

JCU (17-19) recorded 13 hits in the victory. CWRU falls to 22-16 overall. Derek Penman went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Patrick Scholla notched a pair of doubles. Patrick Keohane and Aaron Zawadski also had two hits each.

Christopher Hanley (W, 1-1) started the game for John Carroll, going five innings and surrendering only two runs. Cameron Mayle, Carter Semancik, and James Molnar combined to allow only three runs the rest of the way.

The scoring opened in the top of the first, after Case Western Reserve walked two batters, and a double play moved Keohane to third base. Dominic Mittiga walked, then advanced to the middle of the basepath on a wild pitch. The move allowed Keohane to sprint for home and beat the throw from second base.

Hanley retired the first eight Spartans before surrendering a single in the third inning.

In the fourth, a Penman single, a Scholla double, and a Bondi walk set the table for more offense. Keohane singled to left to score one, and Zawadski punched a ball to center that scored a pair. JCU left the top of the fourth with a 4-0 lead.

In the next frame, CWRU cut the lead in half with a bases-clearing triple.

Penman delivered twice in the next two innings, first in the fifth with an RBI single to center field that scored Joe Charpentier. JCU opened the game up for good in the sixth. Matthew Donnelly singled through the right side to score the first run with one out. Penman then drove home two on a single up the middle.

Senior Mike Raschilla came up big off the bench, punching a single to center field to score Penman and Charpentier. The 10-2 lead would hold. CWRU would score three more times before a 1-2-3 ninth from Molnar.

John Carroll ends the regular season with a twin bill at Capital University on Saturday.
