John Carroll softball fell in both games of a road doubleheader with Heidelberg on Friday afternoon, losing each game by a score of 2-1.
Game two in Tiffin, Ohio went to extra innings, with the Berg winning in nine innings. JCU is now 17-13 overall, and 7-7 in the OAC. Heidelberg improves to 22-9-1 and 11-2-1 in conference play.
Game One – Heidelberg 2, John Carroll 1
Heidelberg homered in the fifth inning to take the lead for good, as the Berg took a 2-1 decision.
Lindsay McKnight drove in JCU's lone run with a first inning single down the left field line that scored
Lauren Cianciolo. McKnight was 1-for-1, walking once.
Angie Zappitelli had two hits, with
Carly Simecek adding the fourth for John Carroll.
AnnMarie Kirchner falls to 5-5, allowing the pair over five innings of work.
Jessica Cook appeared in relief, allowing no baserunners in one inning.
Zappitelli reached third in the sixth inning, but Erin Chapman retired a pair to strand the senior. Chapman moves to 11-4 after a complete game win.
Game Two – Heidelberg 2, John Carroll 1 (9)
It took nine innings, and John Carroll came up just short in the extra innings contest.
Renee Lovett singled to right field in the bottom of the ninth, scoring the winning run.
Hannah Mizener was 3-for-5 with a run and a triple, scoring JCU's run on a throwing error.
Carly Simecek was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Mizener tripled to lead off the game and then scored when the throw from second went awry. It was all the offense JCU would earn.
The Berg matched the run in the second on an RBI double to center field. It would take seven more innings, but the game's final run came in the ninth. Lovett's single ended the doubleheader.
Kelly Geringer (L, 5-3) pitched 5.1 solid innings of relief, allowing just six baserunners and one run. She appeared in relief of
Brianna Lach, who gave up one in three innings.
