John Carroll Survives Strange Start To Finish Strong Against Sage

John Carroll arrived at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex at 7:30 a.m. for what the team thought would be a 9:00 a.m. game. Turns out a schedule change and/or error the Blue Streaks were not informed of had the game starting at 8:00 a.m.

It was a strange start to a day that ended well.

After dropping a 6-1 decision to open the morning against Wheaton (IL), the Blue Streaks rebounded for an 8-1 win over the Sage Colleges. JCU is now 4-2 through six games in Florida.

Wheaton, who was an NCAA tournament qualifier a year ago, had started off slowly in 2017. Closes losses had piled up against the Thunder, and Wheaton brought a 1-5 record into its match-up with John Carroll.

Whatever was wrong appeared to be righted, as Wheaton knocked out nine hits and scored six runs against a trio of John Carroll pitchers.

The Blue Streaks, who had been shut out just once in their last 25 games dating back to last season, were still being blanked until the bottom of the seventh. Quinn Sobieszczanski came through with a bases loaded one and one out sacrifice fly to bring home Olivia Schweiger from third for what would be the lone JCU run.

In the second game of the day, John Carroll fell behind in the top of the first when Kristen Silk hit her first career home run over the center field fence to give Sage a 1-0 lead.

The lead would be short lived, as the Blue Streaks erupted for four runs in both the second and third inning. In the second inning, Angie Zappitelli singled home Lindsay McKnight to tie the game, and was followed by Jennie Broski, who doubled home pinch runner Kayla Navratil to give the Blue Streaks the lead for good.

Sobieszczanski was again involved in the scoring, as her single scored Broski. She would later score on an RBI double by Hannah Mizener.

The four-run third was highlighted by a two out two run single by Sobieszczanski that made the score 8-1.

All this offense was in support of Kelly Geringer, who shook off the first inning home run to scatter five hits over seven innings to earn her first collegiate victory. The freshman struck out two and walked one in her first complete game as a Blue Streak.

John Carroll had 11 hits in all today, marking the third time in Florida that JCU has reached double figures in hits.
