Box Score 2 John Carroll started off its spring break with two matches against strong opponents, one from the Division III world and one at the Division I level.
The Blue Streaks acquitted themselves well in both, defeating Coe College of Iowa 8-1 on Sunday at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, then fell by a 6-1 score Monday to Creighton University at the USTA National Campus also in Orlando.
Lauren O'Malley,
Madisyn Rini,
Nicolette Bourlas,
Katherine Devine,
Jennifer Stroyne and
Molly Traverso all won singles matches, and all but Bourlas won in straight sets. Bourlas, at #3 singles, shook off a second set loss to win the tiebreaker 10-4.
John Carroll was ranked 18th and Coe 20th in the last regional rankings released in November.Â
Using Division I rules when playing the Creighton Bluejays, where the doubles matches are scored as one point awarded to whichever team has the advantage, JCU lost all three doubles matches to fall behind 1-0. The singles matches were also headed that way, but O'Malley prevented the shutout when she defeated Ashley Ishimura 6-0, 7-5 at #1 singles.
JCU is now 3-4 on the season.
