John Carroll baseball opened the spring break schedule with a doubleheader in Fort Myers, Fla., splitting the pair. The doubleheader was played at historic Terry Park, the former home of the Philadelphia (now Oakland) Athletics, the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. JCU is now 2-3 on the year.
Game One - Haverford 6, John Carroll 5 (F/7)
Haverford scored first and scored last in game one, as the Fords walked off on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
Derek Penman had an RBI on 2-for-3 hitting, walking once.
Nathan Reich also had an RBI, going 1-for-4.
Patrick Scholla walked twice. JCU drew seven walks in the loss.
Steven Virost (0-1) surrendered the sacrifice fly.
The Blue Streaks fell behind early, as Haverford scored three runs in the first inning.
Drew Vargo settled down after the first frame allowing no runs in his final four on the mound. John Carroll mounted a rally, racking up five runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-3.
An error and hit-by-pitch sent home the first two JCU runs, followed by a wild pitch. Penman singled to right field for the fourth run, and Reich's center field hit made it 5-3.
An error on a stolen base attempt cut the JCU lead to one in the sixth. In the next frame, Haverford drew two walks and used a passed ball to set up the rally. A single and sacrifice fly ended the game.
Game Two - John Carroll 8, Haverford 2 (F/7)
A five-run inning was once again the catalyst for JCU who finished off a game two victory, 8-2.
Fred Moore (1-0) had a strong performance on the mound, allowing one run in five innings, striking out five batters. He exited in the top of the sixth with one runner on base.
Mark Materise pitched the final two innings, earning a six-out save for his efforts.
Joe Charpentier and
Monroe Donnelly each drove in two runs. Donnelly was 2-for-2, while Charpentier was 2-for-4.
Patrick Keohane was 1-for-3 with three runs and a walk. John Carroll tallied eight hits and three walks in the win. Four Blue Streaks were hit by a pitch.
JCU got on the board in the first inning on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Joe Charpentier then smacked a single to left field, scoring
Monroe Donnelly. Haverford answered in the fourth, getting a run back on an RBI single.
Monroe Donnelly hit an RBI double in the fifth, which Haverford again answered with an RBI double of their own in the next frame.
In the sixth, Haverford allowed one run to score on a fielder's choice.
Monroe Donnelly was hit by a pitch to score
Christopher Houle, and
Matthew Donnelly drove in two more with a single to right field. Charpentier put the exclamation point on the day's second five-run inning with an RBI single to center.
Materise struck out two in the seventh to slam the door.
