Women's Basketball Season Ends With Loss At Capital

The John Carroll University women's basketball team fell to the Capital Crusaders, 87-65, on Saturday afternoon in Bexley, Ohio.

With the loss, John Carroll falls to 7-18 overall and 5-13 in the OAC. Capital finishes the regular season with a 10-15 (6-12 OAC) record.

Both Capital and JCU relied on their offensive powers heavily on Saturday.

Senior Katlyn Spahar finished with a season-high 34 points in her final game as a John Carroll Blue Streak. Capital's Colleen Fondessy finished with a team-high 22 points. Spahar jumped out to earn eight points on 3-of-5 shooting early in the first quarter. Following a timeout, the Crusaders jumped out to a 10-4 lead, taking a 24-13 score into the second period.

The post play by Fondessy and Pla combined for 18 points, off of 8-for-11 shooting from the floor, midway through the second quarter. Capital then exploded on the offensive end, taking a 17-point lead into halftime. The Crusaders converted 19-of-35 shots from the floor in the first half, while out-rebounding JCU 24-14.

Spahar led all scorers with 15 points at halftime, counting for 50% of JCU's first-half points.

JCU came out of the break going on a 6-4 run, fueled by post play of Chelbi Graham and the three-point shooting of Sarah Sprecher. Following free throws, and going 5-for-7 from the field on a 12-3 run, Capital jumped out to a 25-point lead with a little over three minutes remaining in the third.

Fondessy finished the third quarter with a season-high 20 points through three quarters.

Capital continued the pressure into the fourth quarter, keeping their shooting percentage above 50% from the floor. The Crusaders were also shooting 75% from beyond-the-arc midway through the fourth quarter.

Spahar ends her career in University Heights second all-time in scoring (1,892), first in free-throws made (516) and percentage (.824), second in steals (271), fifth in assists (296) and sixth in three-pointers (136). In her tenure, JCU qualified for two NCAA Tournaments and won 64 games. John Carroll ends the season at 7-18.
