Jake Lombardo golden goal in the 93rd minute ended yet another classic confrontation between Ohio Athletic Conference heavyweights John Carroll and Ohio Northern on a warm Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium.
This was the fourth consecutive meeting in which the Blue Streaks and Polar Bears played beyond regulation.
Ohio Northern was the aggressor in the opening 35 minutes, putting the Blue Streaks on their heels as they took the first eight recorded shots of the match. John Carroll began to turn the tide toward the end of the half, yet the contest remained scoreless when time expired at the end of the half.
The Blue Streaks struck first when
Dalton Browsky used a clever touch to flick a ball past a defender and set up a one-on-one situation where he beat Dylan Plank in the 58th minute.
However, the John Carroll lead lasted just 75 seconds. At the 58:22 mark, Cory Lains took a feed down the left side from Chris Garbig and tucked a shot just inside the right post to deadlock the match at 1-1.
The score stood 1-1 at the end of regulation.
It was not until Lombardo started a precise run down the right side that the game would be decided. He won a 50-50 ball near the sideline and raced toward the Ohio Northern goal with Browsky in tow. A quick pass to Browsky was returned to Lombardo, who sliced a shot into the right side for the game winner.
Ohio Northern won the shots battle (14-11) but JCU had the edge in shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (5-1).
Liam McIntosh made two saves for the win.
John Carroll moves to 12-1-1 overall and 4-1 (2nd) with the win, while Ohio Northern falls to 9-5-1 overall and 2-3 in league action.
The Blue Streaks visit first place Otterbein University (11-2, 5-0 OAC) on Tuesday in Westerville
