A second consecutive comeback victory was not in the cards for John Carroll women's basketball on Monday afternoon.
The Blue Streaks stormed back to within one possession in the closing minutes, but fell 70-68 to Kenyon College at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Katlyn Spahar led all scorers with 28, adding six rebounds and two steals. Her shot attempt on the final possession rattled away.
Shmoo Pryor had 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including 12 in the final 10 minutes.
The duo scored eight straight in the first 1:50 of the fourth quarter. JCU pulled to within a possession of Kenyon multiple times, but the Ladies found ways to stave off the Blue Streaks. The defense of John Carroll forced 16 turnovers on the day, aiding the comeback effort.
Anne Principe added eight points, including a pair of threes.
Four Kenyon players recorded 10 or more points, with Charlotte Bussema topping all Ladies with 14. Griffin Tullis turned in a near double-double, notching nine rebounds to go along with nine points. Jessica Gerber hit a pair of three-pointers in the win.
John Carroll shot 33.3 percent from the floor, compared to 46.7 percent for Kenyon. The Blue and Gold fell short in the rebounding battle, 38 to 37.
A back-and-forth first quarter ended with Kenyon holding a 15-12 advantage. In the second, John Carroll held off the Ladies until a Lane Davis layup made the score 23-22. The teams traded leads three more times, including on a Gerber jumper with two seconds left in the half.
Kenyon took the halftime lead at 32-31. Spahar hit intermission with 13 points, while Bailey Dominguez paced Kenyon with 8 points.
The final five minutes of the third quarter belonged to the Ladies, as Kenyon ripped off an 18-5 run to take a 55-44 lead. A pair of Spahar three-pointers and Pryor layup triggered the first comeback early in the fourth. After Kenyon took a 65-58 on a Dominguez layup, JCU closed once again. A missed free throw by Charlotte Bussema set up the final possession, where the game-tying shot fell short.
JCU heads back to conference play with a home date with Otterbein on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
