Final Tournament Weekend For Blue Streaks Yields Positives

The bad news is that John Carroll dropped two matches on Saturday in Pittsburgh on the second day of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational.

The good news is that once again, the Blue Streaks battled well with some tremendous competition.

Competition began in the two-day tournament on Friday, as the Blue Streaks had a rematch against Bethany College. On September 2 at the Mount Union Invitational, JCU had dropped a five-set match to the Bison after leading 2-0.

This time, there would not be a repeat. Behind 13 kills from Julianne McGervey and 31 assists from Kit O'Shaughnessy, the Blue Streaks won in a sweep (25-20, 25-21, 25-12).

JCU began the second day facing off against Randolph Macon, a team with an 8-4 record. The Yellow Jackets were in complete control after winning the first two games -- the second one by a 25-10 score -- but to John Carroll's credit, it fought back. Wins in game three and four forced a fifth and deciding frame. The Blue Streaks led 6-1 early on in game five, but Randolph Macon would chip away and closed out the match by winning the final two points after the teams were knotted at 14-14.

Alexa Webber paced the JCU offense with 12 kills.

In the final match of the weekend, John Carroll dropped a four-setter to host Carnegie Mellon. The Blue Streaks lost the opening game, 25-23, but rebounded to win game two, 28-26. The Tartans then pulled away with solid victories in sets three (25-16) and four (25-18).

McGervey (13) and Webber (11) combined for 24 kills while Katie Cosker was one of four Blue Streaks in double figures for digs, leading the way with 19.

John Carroll is 8-8 on the season, with the eight losses against teams with a combined winning percentage above 70 percent (82-35).
