Late Comeback Ends John Carroll OAC Tournament Journey

John Carroll held a 4-0 lead in their second game in the OAC Tournament. After another opponent comeback late in the game, JCU's journey to a conference championship ended.

Baldwin Wallace scored six runs in the sixth and seventh to eliminate the Blue Streaks, 6-5, in Westerville, Ohio on Friday afternoon.

A three-run third had John Carroll in position, but for the second straight day, an opponent overcame a multi-run deficit after the sixth inning.

Aaron Lapaglia pitched eight innings, but falls to 5-4. Rob Cifelli and Dominic Mittiga each had two hits, with Cifelli driving in two runs. Mittiga, Tyler Gentile and Jacob Schriner each drove in one.

Mittiga and Cifelli were the catalysts of the big third inning. Mittiga's double to center field scored Patrick Keohane, and Cifelli punched a ball through the left side to score Patrick Scholla and Mittiga. In the fifth, JCU added another run when Gentile flied out to center field to bring home Schriner.

Lapaglia allowed two baserunners through four innings, and four through five. In the sixth, Baldwin Wallace used three straight singles, punctuated by a Mark Zimmerman RBI single, to get on the board. Kevin Hagen came off the bench as a pinch hitter with two outs and immediately hit a two-run single.

In the next inning, a two-out hit would doom the Blue Streaks again. Hunter Handel gave BW the lead when he drove a ball up the middle for 2 RBI.

John Carroll made a rally in the bottom of the ninth, but fell just short. With runners on second and third after a wild pitch, Schriner grounded out, scoring Chris LaLiberte. With two outs, a failed pickoff attempt put the tying run at the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.

JCU finishes the regular season and conference play with a 19-22 record, including an 11-7 record in OAC play.
