John Carroll's women's lacrosse team is back in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.
The Blue Streaks defeated the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets by a score of 17-13 at George Finnie Stadium on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the team clinches a spot in the OAC Tournament for the second consecutive year.
Freshman Jill Millard led the way by scoring a team-high seven goals on the evening. The sophomore duo of Grace Curatolo and Gina Vilsack chipped in four and three goals respectively in the winning effort.
After facing an early one goal deficit, the scoring quartet consisting of Curatolo, Mary Jo Murino, Vilsack, and Meghan Harte each netted a goal to provide the Blue and Gold a 4-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets were forced to take a timeout only 11 minutes into the contest.
In an eight-minute span, Baldwin Wallace was able to respond well to JCU's 4-0 scoring run with three consecutive goals themselves. Both programs continued to exchange goals in a chess match between JCU head coach Rachel Dell and BW head coach Kim Russell. Through 23 minutes of play, the score was deadlocked at seven.
Millard was the story of the first half with a trio of goals to give her 34 scores on the campaign. The Yellow Jackets would respond as Hannah Albrechta netted two goals to put the see-saw affair at 9-9 heading into the intermission.
Neither team could score more than two consecutive goals in the early stages of the second half as Millard continued to thread her way through the Yellow Jackets defense and execute on open looks.
The first 3-0 run of the second half belonged to John Carroll when Vilsack returned to the stat sheet in clutch fashion. The sophomore registered her team-leading 44th goal of the year and gave JCU a 14-12 lead with just under 10 minutes left to play in regulation.
The late-game scoring surge for the Blue Streaks continued with six unanswered goals from Millard, Vilsack, and Curatolo. A goal by the Yellow Jackets brought the rally to a halt, but proved to be too little too late.
At the conclusion of Wednesday night's game, Vilsack inched herself closer to the 100 goal milestone in her brief two-year stint as a Blue Streak. She now has a total of 97 scores on her career.
JCU's regular season slate of games will come to an end this Saturday when they play host to the Ohio Northern Polar Bears at 1 PM at Don Shula Stadium.
