Box Score 4 Shaun Keenan knows part of the allure of taking teams down to Florida is the respite of sunshine amidst the dreary winter backdrop of the upper midwest.
But being in the Sunshine State also has a business element to it, and the John Carroll tennis head coach felt the team got valuable experience against opponents who were generally better than the Blue Streaks on paper.
The JCU women posted a record of 1-2 playing against two teams based in Florida and one Division I opponent. The John Carroll men went 0-4 playing three Florida teams and one Division I opponent.
None of the Florida teams were Division III programs.
The Blue Streak women recorded their lone victory in a match against Eckerd on March 2 in St. Petersburg. In the 8-1 win, the three doubles teams ofÂ
Lauren O'Malley and
Madisyn Rini at #1,
Catherine Engel and
Jennifer Stroyne at #2, and
Nicolette Bourlas and
Natalie Bourlas at #3 all won convincingly. In singles play, JCU won five of the six matches.
The losses were both close. Against Southeastern University, a nationally ranked NAIA school located in Lakeland, John Carroll fell by a narrow 5-4 margin. The Fire won all three doubles matches, but the Blue Streaks battled back and won four of the six singles battles but came up one point shy of a victory. O'Malley,Â
Katherine Devine, Rini  andÂ
Molly Traverso were winners in that duel.
The Loyola loss was especially impressive given that the Greyhounds are a Division I school. The Blue Streaks captured the doubles point, but only O'Malley prevailed in singles play. O'Malley is currently #45 in the Oracle/ITA Division III national rankings.
The JCU women's team is now 3-2 on the season.
On the men's side, JCU started the trip with a narrow 5-4 loss to Southeastern on February 29. Two of the four points were scored in singles, asÂ
Jad Abdul-Aal and
David Sinense won in the #1 match while
Tyler Cole and
Nick Siciliano dominated at #3. In singles play, Siciliano and Cole prevailed at #4 and #5, respectively.
JCU then dropped matches to Eckerd by a 9-0 score and Florida Tech (a Division II school in Melbourne; the team is ranked #40 in the nation and #9 in the region) by a 7-2 count.
In its match against Division I Loyola, a 6-1 loss, Abdul-Aal won in both #1 singles and #1 doubles with Sinense.
The Blue Streaks are now 1-5 on the season.
