The script was going along so well.
Down 8-4 in the second period, rallying with seven of the next nine tallies, and heading into the final two minutes with possession in a tie game, John Carroll seemed posied to pull off a road win at Albion College Wednesday evening.
The script took an unexpected turn, however.
Two missed shots, then a turnover, then a costly offsides penalty that led to an extra man opportunity for the host team truned out to be the game-winning sequence for the Britons. Dylan Neal's man-up goal with 50 ticks remaining in regulation was the winning point in a 14-13 victory over John Carroll.
Albion led 3-2 after the first period, and would lead by an 8-4 count with 6:31 to play in the opening half. But two goals by
Declan O'Grady (one in a man-down situation) and one by
RP Whitty pulled John Carroll to within 9-7. Then, with just one second left on the clock,
Gary Anile ripped a shot into the goal from 30 yards out to cut Albion's lead to a single goal heading into halftime.
JCU took its first lead after goals byÂ
Connor Pike and
Michael Hubert in the opening five minutes of the third quarter made the score 10-9.
After the Britons knotted the score at 10-10, O'Grady broke the deadlock with a goal at the 1:30 mark to give the Blue Streaks an 11-10 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Albion would jump to leads of 12-11 and 13-12, but JCU caught their hosts both times on goals by Pike and Anile, setting up the dramatic ending.
Both teams had 23 shots on goals, with the Britons holding a slight advantage in total shots (35-30). Albion also held a decisive advantage in face-offs (22-7) and had twice as many man-up opportunities (8-4).
JCU falls to 4-3 witb the loss, snapping a three-game winning streak. Albion won its second consecutive game to improve to 2-4.Â
