Box Score In the second matchup ever against Elmhurst College, the John Carroll men's lacrosse team came up victorious once again, but this time, at home.
The Blue Streaks defeated the Bluejays, 7-5, early Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium. JCU moves to 4-2 on the season, while Elmhurst falls to 2-5.
Declan O'Grady led the Blue and Gold with three goals and
Michael Hubert added four assists on the day.
Elmhurst College struck first as senior midfielder Nick Klenck found the back of the net in the first three minutes of the play. However, JCU answered with three goals to put them up 3-1.
RP Whitty scored first in a man-up opportunity, then
Gary Anile and
Dakota Thomas both scored after that.
The Bluejays tried to close the gap as Matt Westhaver popped in a goal. JCU's
Collin Rice finished out the first quarter with a goal to put the Blue Streaks up 4-2.
Both offenses seemed to have slowed down in the second quarter, only one goal scored in the first ten minutes by Mal Euson. As the clock was winding down, O'Grady collected his own rebound and fired in another shot to make the score 5-3. However, with just under two minutes remaining in the first half, Euson found the back of the net again. The Blue Streaks held a 5-4 edge as they headed into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be a defensive one. With 10:46 on the clock, Jake Cambron scored the only goal of the quarter to tie up the game at five. JCU got off seven shots, while Elmhurst only shot five times.
To start the fourth quarter, O'Grady struck again to give the Blue Streaks a one-point lead, 6-5. Then,
Collin Riley, O'Grady, and
Connor Pike put in goals to give JCU a four-goal cushion with just under six minutes left to play.
Riley added the final goal for the day with 3:57 remaining to make the score 10-5.
The Blue and Gold won the faceoff 16-of-19 times and outshot Elmhurst 41-16.
The Blue Streaks will travel to Albion, MI to take on the Britons of Albion College on Wednesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m.
