Pryor's Shot Propels Blue Streaks To Victory At Muskingum

As the John Carroll women's basketball team entered play on Saturday, they were fully aware of the stakes: win, and a home playoff game was in hand.

After Muskingum forced overtime in New Concord, the Blue Streaks needed a hero.

Enter Shmoo Pryor

The sophomore knocked down a jumper with two seconds to play in overtime to propel John Carroll to a 63-62 victory.

Pryor recorded 15 points and four assists in the game. Katlyn Spahar led all scorers with 24 points, adding nine rebounds.

It was a tight matchup from the beginning, and in the first quarter, no team jumped ahead of the other. After some traded buckets, Muskingum came out on top in the first period up 17-14, aided by five points from Mallory Taylor.

The Blue Streaks would not allow Muskingum to hang onto the lead for long, however. They came out and quickly put in a layup to make it a one point contest, but a couple of turnovers and fouls forced JCU to call a timeout. The Blue Streaks struggled to limit the Muskies second chance opportunities, but went on a streak of their own, outscoring Muskingum 10-2 over a two minute span. The Muskies were able to rebound from the JCU tear and ended the half only down by four, 30-26.

John Carroll shot very well in the first half and moved the ball around well, dishing 11 total assists. Battaglia was a crucial contributor off the bench, putting in seven points.  On the other side, Mallory Taylor lead all scorers in the half with 10 points, four boards, and even two blocks.  Hallie Stocker, also coming off the bench, contributed eight points for the Muskies, helping take some of the load off Taylor's shoulders.

Throughout the third, the Blue Streaks where able to hang onto the lead until the Fightin' Muskies tied it up ewith a pair of free throws near the end of the quarter. Pryor held the ball for the final shot, faked out her defender, and made a difficult layup in the final seconds to put JCU up 42-40 heading into the fourth.

John Carroll held onto the lead for most of the fourth quarter, but Taylor and the Muskies fought to stay in the game. Spahar converted an and-one to put JCU up 52-48 with 3:37 left, but Taylor quickly drained another shot at the other end to make it a two point game.

The Muskies forced overtime, and quickly jumped to a 61-54 lead, forcing JCU to call a timeout.  If you had batted your eyes, you would have missed it. The Blue Streaks came charging back, down two with 1:28 left.  Muskingum hit a free throw and then gathered in the rebound, going up 62-59.

Spahar poked the ball from Taylor's hands and called John Carroll's last timeout with 36 seconds left. Six seconds after the timeout, Spahar got a quick layup, making it a one-point game with only 30 seconds. The Muskies missed a layup, and JCU took possession. Graham put up a shot to no avail, but the Blue Streaks grabbed the rebound.

Pryor missed a shot with four seconds left, but corralled her own rebound and drained a shot with two seconds remaining.

With the win, JCU earns the sixth seed in the OAC Tournament and will host Wilmington on Monday night at 7:30 in the first round.
