The John Carroll women's volleyball faced a tough battle on Tuesday evening against the 20-2 Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.
John Carroll came back from a 2-0 deficit, winning the last three sets (25-19, 25-17, 15-7) over the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night in the DeCarlo Center. It was the first victory in five sets for the Blue Streaks this season. They were previously 0-5 in tiebreakers.Â
JCU was looking to capitalize on momentum after their sweep last week at Wilmington. The Yellow Jackets quickly stopped that effort. The game started strong to a 3-3 tie from the teams, but service errors and defensive pressure from Baldwin Wallace gave the Yellow Jackets a 25-14 win in set one. Not to be overlooked, though, were senior
Kit O'Shaughnessy's two kills and assists.
In set two, JCU's offense held strong, Â led by senior
Alexa Webber and junior Julianna McGervey, both with two kills. However, Baldwin Wallace's Alicia Lortcher and libero Ashley Nuding led a staunch defense. JCU held tough through the second, but fell once more, 25-20.
The third set began with a 3-0 lead off sophomore
Nicole Pilewski's serves and another kill from McGervey. The teams started going point-for-point, with John Carroll eventually taking a 12-7 lead before Baldwin Wallace was able to get the ball back. The Blue Streaks were able to finish off a 25-19 win, headlined by 16 kills from the team; half of those from McGervey.
The fourth was much of the same: a quick lead from the Blue Streaks leading into a long battle to maintain control. This set featured long volleys, and an elongated set. John Carroll kept the lead and tied the game up at two sets apiece with a final score of 25-17.
John Carroll energized the crowd in the final set with a 8-0 lead before changing sides of the court. With Pilewski serving, John Carroll did not back down and shut Baldwin Wallace down 15-7, winning the game.
Helping lead the team to victory was McGervey with a career-high 19 kills and O'Shaughnessy with 38 assists. Defensively,
Katie Cosker led with 23 digs, and
Leah Switalski added seven blocks.
The Blue Streaks will be back defending the DeCarlo Center on Oct. 15 against Ohio Northern University at 1:00 p.m.
