Allowing just six runs over the course of two games would seem to be a recipe for success.
Scoring two runs over the course of two game spoils the previous recipe.
The John Carroll softball team found that missing an ingredient as important as offense was too much to overcome, as the Blue Streaks was eliminated after droppin a pair of games Friday at the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in Tiffin, Ohio.
JCU fell to host and top seeded Heidelberg, 3-2, on a walk-off single in game one. In the consolation bracket, JCU was held to a single hit in a 3-0 loss to #3 seed Ohio Northern.
Against Heidelberg, the fourth-seeded Blue Streaks trailed 2-0 after four innings before making their comeback. Lauren CIanciolo drove in
Taylor Tercek with a one-out double in the top of fifth to cut Heidelberg's lead to 2-1, and then
Christie Wade had a sacrifice fly to drive home the tying run in the top of the sixth.
Starting pitcher
Ann Marie Kirchner survived a scoring threat in the sixth, but the JCU hurler could not survive the seventh. Heidelberg loaded the bases on a single, a bunt, and a walk with no one out, and then scored the winning run on a single to center by Mikaela Mitsch.
Kirchner went six innings in the loss, giving up 12 hits and three runs, striking out five and walking two.
Against Ohio Northern, John Carroll simply could not figure out Brittany Lightel, despite the fact the Polar Bears starting pitcher managed just one strikeout in seven innings. She also walked a pair of batters, but surrendered just one hit -- a two-out single by Tercek in the sixth inning -- in shutting down the Blue Streaks.
Rachel Byrnes, in her final game as a Blue Streak, gave up just four hits in six innings. She allowed a single run in the first and two more in the second, but kept Ohio Northern off the scoreboard the rest of the way. She allowed just two baserunners over the final four innings.
John Carroll ends its 2015 campaign with a 22-17 record.
