Playing as the visitors, the No. 24 John Carroll University baseball team grinded out a 3-2, 6-4 sweep over Capital on Sunday afternoon.

The games were originally slated for Saturday in Bexley, Ohio but a scheduling conflict pushed the games back to Sunday.

John Carroll improves to 21-9, 10-4 OAC with the wins while Capital falls to 12-17, 4-10 OAC.

The first three innings featured a pitcher's duel between
Brandon Maddern and Tyler Spears. The two matched each other with seven-pitch second innings and would allow a one-out hit in the third.

John Carroll would go on to win the first game of the twin bill 3-2.

John Carroll broke through first in the top of the fourth.
Bobby Sabatino and
David Crowley led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
Tyler Gentile reached on a fielder's choice but the Crusaders were able to force out Sabatino, the lead runner.
Mark Huddle delivered a two-run single to right center to give John Carroll a 2-0 lead.
Capital scored its first run of the contest in the home half of the fourth. Tyler Gibbons punched a two-out single up the middle to bring in Justin Ennis. Maddern recovered inducing the 5-3 groundout to strand a pair of Capital runners.

John Carroll pushed the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Crowley legged out a one-out double. The junior left fielder would come on to score on Huddle's two-out double down the left field line.

The Crusaders made the score 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Capital recorded three straight two-out hits with Zackary Ary driving in Brett Colburn.

Capital had the tying run reach base in the eighth in the ninth. In the ninth,
Aaron Lapaglia was able to start a 1-4-3 twin killer to end the game.

Maddern picked up the win moving to 4-2 on the year. The junior left-hander allowed one run on four hits in six innings of work. Lapaglia earned his third save of the year allowing one run on four hits in three innings of relief.

Huddle led the way at the plate. The shortstop went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Crowley added two hits and two runs.

Drew Doring took two innings to settle in but his offense would have his back as John Carroll would take the second game 6-4.

Logan Bastin jumped on a 0-2 pitch drilling a solo homer in the top of the first.

John Carroll answered right back in the top of the second.
James Molnar laced a two-out single which was misplayed by Gibbons, Capital's right fielder allowing Raschilla to come in to score on the play.

The Crusaders scored three runs in the second. Jake Foley crushed a two-run double into the left field corner. He would be followed by RBI single from Colburn.

JCU's senior ace settled in from there only allowing one hit over the next four innings of work.

On the flip side John Carroll began chipping away to give its right-hander some run support.

A misplay by Ary in left field allowed Crowley to come in to score in the fourth making it a 4-2 game.

John Carroll made it a one-run game in the fifth.
Tyler Gentile laced a two-out single through the left single. He would advance to third on a single from Huddle. Gentile, JCU's first baseman, came in on a wild pitch from Capital reliever Jacob Sheaf.

The Blue and Gold took the lead in the sixth inning. Raschilla led off the frame reaching on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Jacob Schriner. Molnar came through with his second hit of the game to bring in Raschilla to tie the game at four.

Kenny Hanna.

John Carroll added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it a 6-4 game. Gentile led off the inning with a double to the fence in left center. He would come in to score on Crowley's double down the right field line.

Doring (OAC-best 8-0) fired 6 2/3 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. The senior struck out eight.
Mark Materise entered in the seventh and worked out of a bases-loaded jam after allowing a single to his first batter. He would go on to finish with two scoreless innings including a strikeout, throw out double play in the ninth.

Lapaglia recorded the final out of the game for his second save of the day. He likewise gave up a single to his first hitter to load the bases. It marked the first time a player has saved both games of a twin bill since
Kevin Rosinski did so against Muskingum on April 17, 2012.

Huddle was able to keep the singles allowed by both Materise and Lapaglia in the infield to prevent runs from scoring but did not have any feasible plays to retire runners.

At the plate JCU received big production from Gentile (2-for-5, two runs) and Cifelli (3-for-5).
