John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace played an emotional and spirited 60 minutes of lacrosse Wednesday evening, and their efforts almost seemed to demand extra six minutes to decide matters.
So it came to pass after regulation ended in an 11-11 tie, and John Carroll took advantage of the extra time by scoring four goals in the final six minutes for a 15-13 victory.
The Blue Streaks trailed 4-0 after just six minutes of action. But
Roserita DiMillo helped lead a charge, and JCU trailed by a 6-4 score with 8:43 to play in the opening period.
After the Yellow Jackets responded with a goal, the Blue Streaks closed out the half with four unanswered points.
Chelsea Jackson scored two of them, including the go-ahead goal with 1:23 left, to give John Carroll and 8-7 lead at the intermission.
Baldwin Wallace was the aggressor early in the second half, and stormed out to a 10-9 lead. John Carroll managed just one goal (by
Gina Vilsack) in the opening 18 minutes of the second half. It was not until a pair of back-to-back yellow cards presented two man up situations that the Blue Streaks delivered a counterpunch. Jackson put in both goals to push the Blue Streaks back on top, 11-10.
Maddie Russell would tie the game at the 9:11 mark for Baldwin Wallace, but little did anyone know it would be the last point scored in regulation. A frantic pace ensued, and neither team could sustain a possession long enough to produce a realistic scoring opportunity. Regulation time ended with the teams knotted at 11-11.
JCU scored first in the overtime when
Grace Curatolo notched her 35th goal of the year. After the two teams switched sides, Baldwin Wallace capitalized on a John Carroll turnover and tied the score on a Jenna Turner shot.
On the draw that followed, Baldwin Wallace suffered a yellow card for a hit to the head, and the Blue Streaks pounced with yet another Jackson goal with 1:41 to play that proved to be the game winner. Curatolo and Vilsack followed with insurance goals.
Mary Jo Murino made five saves as the Blue Streaks won for the seventh consecutive game to improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.
Baldwin Wallace fell to 4-5 and 1-2 in league play.
