A couple more firsts occurred for the John Carroll University women's lacrosse team. The team had its first regular-season road trip and first out-of-state trip.
Â
Unfortunately the team will still be in search of its first regular-season road win after a 20-9 loss to Southwestern on Thursday evening in Georgetown, Texas.
Â
John Carroll was playing catch up from the start as Southwestern's Kate Davis had the Pirates on the board 38 seconds into the contest.
Â
Reining OAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Grace Curatolo netted the equalizer on a free position shot less than five minutes into the contest. The tie would not stand as Courtney Ragland rattled home a response 15 seconds later. The goal would spark a 4-0 run from the Pirates.
Â
Gina Vilsack got the Blue Streaks back on track on a feed from
Roserita DiMillo with just over 11 minutes left in the opening half. Vilsack would break up another run from the Pirates, this one a 3-0 stretch with her second goal of the half.
Â
Cuartolo netted her second score of the half to make it a six-goal deficit at the half.
Â
A pair of 3-0 runs from Southwestern would put the game out of reach in the second half.
Â
Meghan Harte led the Blue and Gold with a trio of goals in the second half. JCU's other second half scores would come off the sticks of Curatolo and
Chelsea Jackson. Curatolo would finish tied for the team lead with three goals.
Â
John Carroll would finish with 44 ground balls led by Harte's nine.
Kaley LaForce and
Olivia Marsh each added six ground balls on the night.
Â
The Blue Streaks fell to 1-1 on the young season while the Pirates improved to 4-3.
Â
John Carroll remains on the road with a 3 p.m. Eastern time at Elmhurst on Saturday, March 14.
