Big Second Half Propels ONU Past Men's Basketball

The John Carroll University men's basketball team has not fared well at opponents who it defeated in OAC Tournament games on the road last year. On the flip side, the Blue Streaks won at Wilmington last week Saturday, the place where the Blue and Gold fell in the 2014 OAC Tournament championship.

However, today's contest took place in Ada, Ohio, where John Carroll topped Ohio Northern in the second round of the OAC Tournament. A red-hot shooting effort from the Polar Bears pulled the hosts past the Blue Streaks 92-81 on Saturday afternoon.

For the game Ohio Northern shot 50.8 percent while holding John Carroll to 39.1 percent.

Ryan Farragher paced the Blue and Gold with a career-high 19 points. The junior was 8-of-10 shooting from the field and would add three rebounds in the contest. Senior David Hendrickson added 16 points and 16 rebounds while Doug Caputo and Jake Hollinger both scored 10 points.

JCU's first platoon raced out to a 9-2 lead less than four minutes into the game with Danny Wallace capping the run with a 3-pointer. ONU responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run to take the 12-9 lead with 13:37 remaining in the first half.

The Blue Streaks' first platoon earned the lead back with a 10-0 run late in the first half. David Linane sparked the rally with four point to put John Carroll up six with 4:18 left in the frame.

Jack Ellerhorst cut JCU's lead to one with 1:11 remaining in the half. John Carroll would respond with two offensive rebounds before a 3-pointer from Hendrickson sent John Carroll into the locker room with a 35-31 advantage.

A 7-0 run from the Polar Bears handed the lead back to ONU at 45-40 with 16:58 remaining. Ohio Northern never looked back pushing its lead to double digits with 8:31 remaining.

Farragher would look to will John Carroll back into the game with 12 points over the final 4:27, but the deficit was too much for the Blue Streaks to overcome.

John Carroll fell to 13-5, 9-3 OAC while Ohio Northern improved to 10-9, 5-7 OAC.

John Carroll remains on the road to take on Otterbein at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in Westerville, Ohio.
