John Carroll's depth proved to be a big difference, as the opening and closing relays picked up massive points for the Blue Streaks and enabled head coach
Mark Fino to pick up his first win against his former program Saturday at Oberlin College.
A closing 15-point haul in the 400 Free Relay delivered a 120-114 victory for JCU over the host Yeomen.
Complete ResultsFino, who has the head men's swimming coach at Oberlin from 2006-2013 (and the women's from 2004-2013), lost both sides of last year's meet versus Oberlin. His Blue Streaks women were on the shiort side of today's meet as well.
But the John Carroll men came through.
Nick Bockanic,
Michael Goggins,
Corey Kehm and John SCantling started things off with a decisive win in the 400 Medley Relay (3:48.94).
Goggins later would win a crucial race in the 200 Breast in a time of 2:23.36.
Brian Hulseman produced two victories on the afternoon, winning the 200 Free (1:50.34) by less than a second over Oberlin's Christopher Ayoub, and placing first in the 200 Fly (2:03.69).
When the meet reached the final event, JCU trailed 114-105. But Oberlin had exhausted its swimmer availability and John Carroll swam unopposed in the meet-closing 400 Free Relay. The "A" team of
Gabe Nock, Kehm,
Stephen Attewell and Hulseman won in 3:32.36. JCU's "B" team of
James Walleshauser, Bockanic,
Anton Olson and
Chris Libertin put the icing on the cake by finishing second in 3:45.77.
The win puts John Carroll's record at 3-4 on the year.
