Efficient Offense Carries The Day As JCU Women's Soccer Beats Kenyon

Dana Roman scored the first of John Carroll's three goals against Kenyon
Box Score Suffering two shutouts in the first three games was not a fun way for the John Carroll women's soccer team to begin the 2014 campaign.

Saturday's outing at Kenyon proved to be a joyous occasion by comparison. Goals by Dana Roman, Maggie Reilly and Kay Akerly provided enough firepower to boost the Blue Streaks to a 3-1 road win.

It was not without consternation, as Kenyon won the shots battle by an astounding 25-5 count. But John Carroll was efficient in its attack, finding the back of the net on three of its five attempts.

The first was a goal by Dana Roman, who took a pass from Andrea Regrut and headed in the first point of the match in the 14th minute.

Reilly then got into the act, as some late half substitutions paid off for JCU head coach Mike Marich. Molly Zugger, who had just entered the match minutes earlier, fed a pass to Reilly, who buried the shot for her first career goal. Reilly, a freshman, was also making her first career start.

John Carroll carried a 2-0 lead into the break.

Kenyon sliced its deficit in half when Camila Kirtzman scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute, but Akerly gave the Blue Streaks much needed insurance when she scored her 29th career goal -- and first of 2014 -- in the 60th minute.

Haley McDonald made nine saves to post her second win of the season as JCU improved to 2-2 on the year.

Kenyon suffered its first defeat and slipped to 1-1-1.
