Aaron Lapaglia finished with 12 strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader.
Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Hanging in the dugout for the John Carroll University baseball team is a chart which reads "BASE2". The Blue Streaks would need to execute all five components: big inning, answer back, extend the lead, 2-out RBI in order to preserve its unblemished conference record. Standing in John Carroll's way was Ohio Northern, one of the hottest teams in the conference.
John Carroll would execute all of the components but score first in the first game to take the 6-2 win. However JCU would only score first in the second game falling 3-1.
The Blue Streaks had their 8-game win streak snapped with the split and have an overall record of 12-7, 5-1 OAC. The Polar Bears' record now stands at 16-5, 4-2 OAC.
"It was atough split today but I can sense we were not satisfied with just the one win from our guys," said head coach
Marc Thibeault. "They know they can sweep and stay on top of the leaderboard in this tough league."
Game OneSophomore
Aaron Lapaglia was nearly lights out again for John Carroll and the Blue Streaks extended their win streak to eight games with the 6-2 decision. Lapaglia settled in to hurl his second complete game of the season after giving up a first inning 2-run homer to Dan Belliveau. The sophomore would finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts, the most by a Blue Streak since Matt Fort fanned 16 Baldwin Wallace hitters on April 2, 2008.
"Aaron was very effective," said Thibeault. "He threw first pitch strikes and located his curveball well. You could tell their hitters never were comfortable in the box today. It was a great performance."
John Carroll would answer back.
Jimmy Spagna hit a solo home run for his second straight game with a home run in the second inning.
Mitchell Herringshaw added a 2-out RBI in the third inning with a single up the middle to bring in
Jake Miller to tie the game at two.
The Blue and Gold took the lead in the fourth. Leading the way was shortstop
Mark Huddle who laced his sixth double of the week to bring in
Chet Lauer.
John Carroll extended its lead with a big 3-run fifth inning. The Blue Streaks utilized timely hitting stringing together four straight hits to start the inning including RBIs from Herringshaw and Spagna. JCU would take advantage of an ONU fielding error to score the inning's final run.
John Carroll outhit Ohio Northern 15-8. Leading the way at the plate were Sabatino, Spagna and
Tyler Gentile who each finished with three hits.
Game TwoWith hits at a premium for John Carroll in the second game
Brandon Maddern looked to keep his team in the game.
The 6-9 sophomore turned in his second straight 11-strikeout performance.
Added Thibeault, "Madden was equally effective. He didn't have his pint point command but grinded through the start and gave us every chance to win."
Robby Cifelli looked to jump start the offense as John Carroll would score first in the top of the first inning. The sophomore drew a leadoff walk and darted around the bases on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Sabatino drove in the run on an RBI groundout.
Ohio Northern's Ben Glischinski would keep John Carroll's hitters at bay for the next six innings only allowing two hits.
Down 3-1 in the ninth Gentile hit a 2-out double to put the tying run at second. Huddle flied out to end the game.
Maddern ran into a jam in the sixth inning. The Polar Bears strung together three hits after Belliveau's 1-out triple to take the 2-run lead. Ohio Northern had tied the game in the fourth inning.
