Eric Grimaldi won his 50th career match as JCU men's tennis pulled off a win over Ohio Northern
For the second time this week the fate of the John Carroll University men's tennis team rested in
Alex Mihas. The sophomore did not disappoint.
Mihas clinched JCU's second OAC win this week with a 6-2, 7-5 win in the No. 5 singles position. He defeated ONU's Sam Prewitt to give John Carroll the 5-4 win over Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.
The Polar Bears are the defending OAC regular season and tournament champions and have captured five of the last seven OAC regular season and tournament titles.
John Carroll jumped out to an early 2-1 lead at the end of doubles play. The freshmen duo of
Jad Abdul-Aal and
Nick Siciliano ran their doubles streak to 11 straight with a 8-4 win at the No. 2 position. Also winning in doubles were Mihas and
Eric Grimaldi who took their doubles match by an 8-4 count.
Abdul-Aal (6-4, 6-0) and Grimaldi (6-2, 6-4) picked up wins in singles to secure the match.
Grimaldi, a senior, recorded his 50th career win today when he won his 30th career singles match (added to 20 wins in doubles).
"You can always count on Eric to show up and play well in big matches," said head coach
Shaun Keenan. "He has the experience of four years and it showed in today's match. Alex is growing in confidence every week and this last week he played flawless under pressure."
John Carroll improved to 5-7, 3-0 OAC. Ohio Northern fell to 9-3, 3-1 OAC. Ohio Northern had its 5-match win streak snapped. Ohio Northern had not lost a regular-season conference match since April 21, 2012 – a span of 13 matches.
